Why did you Start Building Playhouses Anyway?

One of the most relatable quotes I have ever read in a novel before comes from Anthony Hope’s A Prisoner of Zenda: “When I read a story, I skip the explanations; yet the moment I begin to write one, I find that I must have an explanation.” Thus, it comes as no surprise, that when Megan and I started talking with friends and family about our idea to make playhouses, the inevitable question presented itself: “Where did you get the idea to build playhouses?” And here, my explanation:

It all started with the bird flu. I had wanted to keep chickens for a long time, but when eggs hit five dollars a dozen at the grocery store, I finally had my excuse. After doing less research than I should have, I told Megan I wanted our own flock. She was, unexpectedly, less than thrilled. After a little domestic back and forthing, it was determined that chicken coops, in Megan’s mind were dingy, dumpy little things covered in poop. (To be fair, anything that has to do with chickens is usually covered in a good thick layer of the stuff). I promised to build an aesthetically pleasing coop, to keep it clean, and suddenly the chicken hype train had a crew of two. The coop building went perfectly with absolutely no hiccups, as all Instagram projects do, and before long we had a flock. The important take away here is that the coop, as promised, was cute.

Fast forward a couple years, Megan and I are parents of two (with one on the way!) and feeling like we have too much time on our hands. We were looking for a business idea, and one day while we were working in our garden I looked at the coop and thought, “Well, that’s not too far off from a playhouse.” Of course it had one too many egg boxes, and it was short a play kitchen and some window planters, but it was cute, and it was just the right size for our toddling crew. The more we talked over the idea, the more we liked it. The more we liked it, the more excited we got. The more excited we got, the more we worked to make it a reality. And now, we’re thrilled to launch this vision to the world!
